Science, Engineering and Art by the Sea

Yaquina View Elementary School
Newport, Oregon

This is your website to an ocean expedition experiment. We are exploring a submarine volcano called Axial Volcano located over 200 miles off the coast of Oregon. Your teacher, Mrs. Jody Hanna, has sent along your experiment. What will happen to the styrofoam cups when sent to the bottom of the sea? The water at very deep depths puts a lot of pressure on objects. Most science gear is specifically designed to withstand these forces. Styrofoam has a lot of air spaces which under pressure gets squeezed out. So what happens when you take all the air out of styrofoam?
