ACTIVITIES
Nutrient Laboratory: Supervise activities of the nutrient laboratory which provides inorganic nutrient data (silicic acid, phosphate, nitrate, nitrite, ammonium) to multiple programs at PMEL.
Ecosystems: Work with physical oceanographers and fisheries scientists to better understand how Alaskan marine ecosystems respond to changes in the environment. This includes studies in the Arctic, Bering Sea, Gulf of Alaska, and Aleutian Islands. Some environmental changes that have occurred include warm events in the Gulf of Alaska, stanzas of climate variability in the Bering Sea, and reductions of ice extent in the Arctic.
Global Hydrography: Though partnerships with Scripps and NOAA/AOML in the GO-SHIP repeat hydrographic program, we continue to build the premier deep-water global nutrient data set.
Innovative Technology: Co-lead PI for the Innovative Technology for Arctic Exploration program which develops and deploys innovative platforms and sensors in the US Arctic. Some of these innovations include the Saildrone, the Oculus coastal glider, the air-deployed ALAMO floats, ice-responsive profiling moorings, and pop-up floats.
