Report: This morning we finished ROPOS dive 542 at south Cleft with all of our goals accomplished there. All 11 of the extensometer instruments were in place and seemed to be working properly. At the end of the dive we were able to get a fluid sample, a biological sample, and replace some temperature probes at a neaby vent site with spectacular 15 m high black smoker chimneys. After ROPOS was on deck and the elevator mooring was recovered, we transited north to Axial volcano where we will work during the rest of this expedition. The first dive here (543) began this evening and will assess the activity in the Marker 33 area, which has been the most robust of the new hydrothermal vent sites on the 1998 lava flow. We will be interested in whether activity has diminished or increased since last year. We will also recover and deploy various instruments and samplers at the site. |
